Personal Time Management 101 – Crash Course

Here are some basic steps, which should give you a basic idea of what it takes to get you going:

  1. Define what you want out of life. Do this by listing your goals and values. What do you really want out of life? When you do this step thoroughly, you will notice a difference. You will also see that 90% of people have not completed this first essential step towards a more constructive life.
  2. Figure out some next steps towards your life goals. After that, start taking small steps towards them. We offer follow-up forms, which help you better see where you are today, and in verifying if you are actually doing anything to reach your goals. If you define your goals tonight, you can start taking steps tomorrow. Even if these are fundamental steps, they do not have to take forever. You can always come back and revise your goals later.
  3. If you are really stressed, start using some of the exercises we suggest for managing stress in our dedicated section for that.
  4. Take a firm control of your everyday tasks, and projects. This is a basic time management habit needed at our hectic workplaces today. Techniques of these sorts really represent “hands on” time management. Knowing that you have your tasks under control will also help you in staying calmer. Stress won’t catch you, at least so easily.
  5. Take control of your incoming paper flow (brochures, magazines, invoices, etc.). Organize your existing papers and documents too, while you are at it.
  6. Clean your desk at work, and keep it clean. You will notice that you now actually can pull it off, as you already have taken care of your paper piles. Who would have thought? Do you start to realize the joy of increased skills in personal organization? It really benefits your time management.
  7. Transform your email software from an task overwhelming enemy to an effective tool, which actually helps you keeping in control of things. You will find joy in an empty email inbox, once you learn how to do it. Keep it empty. You will learn this too. Make Outlook or Lotus your ally.
  8. Start using your increased free time to develop yourself in new or lost areas of life. What was again that hobby you once had?

Increasing your personal productivity, and learning personal time management skills are possible things to accomplish for anyone. It is a fun journey, and one that is highly recommended. Just taking a few steps to the right direction could start saving 10-20 minutes of your time, every single day from here onwards. This is exactly why I am so excited about this subject.

The potential for change is often huge: the average savings potential for most individuals during a workday is at least one full hour. That is one hour more, per day, you can use for going earlier home, or for speeding up your career advancement. It is also an investment into a higher quality of work. You are free to use your new-found time anyway you like, just use it more wisely than you do today. Take control of your personal and work life now!
